1704
The recipe below is a well known varnish recipe. It makes a beautiful golden spirit varnish which is especially good for touch up, as well as for new instruments.
45 g Seedlac
7.5 grams gum elemi (optional) żywica elemi, kanarecznika
200 ml Alcohol
9 ml. Lavender Oil Spike olejek lawendy szeokolistej, może byc terpentyna ?
Place all of the ingredients in a glass jar and let it dissolve, stirring at least twice a day, until the lac no longer sits and sticks to the bottom of the jar (This may take from one to three weeks).
When completely dissolved, boil in a double boiler for seven minutes, let cool, and then boil again for seven minutes. While still warm, filter through a cloth (I use a cheese cloth). If it is allowed to cool it will be difficult to filter. Repeat the filtering process until there is no more dirt in the filter. Once this process is complete, and the varnish has cooled, it is ready to use. Since alcohol is lost in the cooking process, thinning with alcohol will probably be necessary to obtain brushing consistency. Be sure to have extra alcohol on hand for this.

1704N
This variation of the 1704 varnish I prefer for the varnishing of new instruments. A small amount of mastic improves adherence between coats, and the sandarac adds a bit of hardness.
45 grams seedlac
5 grams gum mastic
5 grams gum sandarac
200 ml. alcohol
5-7 ml. Lavender spike oil
Preparations are the same as for the 1704 recipe. The mastic is a softener and improves adherence between coats. Sandarac is a hardener, and gives a bit more gloss to the varnish. Less Lavender oil makes the varnish a bit harder (compensated by the mastic).

Lakier Stradivariego
Ingredienti.- nalewki z propolisu (150 g), wosk pszczeli (75 g), olej z siemienia lnianego (275g)

8)
100 g of white shellac
100 g of Rosin kalafonia?
50 g of Castor Oil olej rycynowy?
20 g of Siam Benzoin (optional) (żywica benzoesowa , styrax)
1 liter of Denatured alcohol
Dissolve the shellac and the Rosin in 1 liter of denatured alcohol. Add the Castor Oil once the resins are completely dissolved. The Siam Benzoin is optional, it will enhance the sheen of the varnish and provide a permanent odor.
It’s possible to add to this varnish preparation some Gamboge to color the varnish with a nice golden yellow. It’s also possible to add some ultra penetrating stain to color the varnish, 30 ml / L.
Shellac can be replaced with an equal quantity of Canada Balsam or with some Venice Turpentine, this will enhance the clarity of the sheen while improving its resistance. The shellac can also be replaced with another dewaxed shellac.

Jim, I have a couple of recipes for spirit varnish. They are from Fiorini and Bisiach, they do both have Venice Turpentine. There are a few differences especially the amount of Alcohol. I got this from a Strad article in a June 1988 publication, written by John Dilworth. They were writing letters back and forth discussing the problems with varnish.
10a)
Bisiach's recipe:
Sandarac 125gms
Gum lac 62gms
Mastic 31gms
Benzoin 31gms
Turpentine 62gms I believe this is Venice Turpentine.
Alcohol 2 liters
10b)
Fiorini's Recipe :
Sandarac 125gms
Mastic 62gms
Gum Lac 62gms
Elemi 31gms
Venice Turpentine 62gms
Alcohol 1 Liter
Quote from article:
This is not the "1704" recipe, but a fairly soft spirit varnish. Fiorini queries the large volume of alcohol, pointing out that it would be too dilute and dissolve the previously applied coats. He suggests halving the amount of alcohol, and gives his own formulation, which he took from Watin.
He explains that the Elemi is preferable to Benzoin, "since it is more stable and mixes better", and that "the higher proportion of Mastic gives a greater brilliance and is more "resurgent".
Now you can take from this what you will. You would have to make small batches and try. For my money I think the Bisiach recipe is the one I'd try first but half the alcohol. The Fiorini recipe seems a lot of Eiemi.
My current ratio is 1:4 linoxyn to seedlac and 1:10 mastic to seedlac.
